The English brings together the work of the actEnglish company “The Non-Native Collective” since it was set up a few years ago. We have a core group of members who have contributed with ideas and we performed a scratch production last February. The cast has now increased with new members joining and the play has been re-written and rehearsed.
Competitors enter an English language teaching system where they attempt to prove their linguistic and cultural abilities in order to be selected as a new ambassador. Classes are mixed with bizarre tests, script recitals and interviews interrupted by real stories of language learning and teaching by cast members. A teacher is on hand to support the new candidates but one of them is determined not to play along and instead has designs of her own.
Dark but also light hearted – The English explores the power of language and teaching as the world gets smaller and language skills become highly competitive in the global market.
